World Environment Day
Annual Awareness and Action
Each World Environment Day is organized around a theme that draws attention to a particularly pressing environmental issue. The 2019 theme is "Beat Air Pollution." Air pollution is a global health crisis, causing millions of premature deaths each year. The World Health Organization estimates that 9 out of 10 people worldwide breathe polluted air.
Historical Themes
Previous World Environment Day themes have included:
- 2013: Think, Eat, Save
- 2016: Go Wild for Life
- 2017: Connecting People to Nature
- 2018: Beat Plastic Pollution
2019 Focus: Air Pollution
This year's theme, "Beat Air Pollution," highlights the urgent need for action to reduce air pollution. Exposure to air pollution can cause a range of health problems, including respiratory infections, heart disease, and lung cancer. Children and the elderly are particularly vulnerable to the effects of air pollution.
There are many things that can be done to reduce air pollution, such as switching to cleaner energy sources, improving energy efficiency, and reducing the number of vehicles on the road. We can all make a difference by taking action to reduce our own contribution to air pollution.
